My Tbilisi Top Ten list.
If you are planning on visiting Georgia's capital city, there is so much to do. With so many great experiences, it can be hard to decide on an itinerary. Here is my top 10 Tbilisi list to give you a hand with your vacation planning.
10. A walking tour of Old Tbilisi. The old town is full of
fantastic little places, old beautiful churches and cobblestone streets filled
with people selling their souvenirs. Either book a guided tour or go your own
way, spending an afternoon in old town is a must!
9. Dry Bridge shopping. Head down to the dry bridge to find
an outdoor market that’s half antiques and half flea market. Down at dry bridge,
you can buy everything from traditional Georgian craft to soviet military
metals to cheap little trinkets. There is guaranteed to be something that will catch
your fancy
8. A day trip to Kakheti. Located east of the capital city,
Kakheti is the region most famous for winemaking. Take a day trip out to visit
some vineyards and sample some fantastic wines while enjoying the balmy summer
heat.
7. Visit the Opera house! Both the plays put on and the building
itself is a cultural experience. This building is a stunning design with beautiful
brickwork. Then head inside and watch a beautiful opera with Georgian subtitles
6. Take the funicular up to the fortress. From old Tbilisi, you
can ride the funicular all the way to the top of Tbilisi fortress. Stop by to
view the Deda Kartli statue. You can then walk down the many stairs for wonderful
views of the city and take in the mountain air
5. The botanica gardens. From the top of Tbilisi fortress,
you can also walk down into the botanical gardens for an afternoon of breezy
beautiful tress. Georgia is known for its beautiful nature and this is an easy way
to experience it without leaving the city
4. The Georgian National Ballet. Stop by for a stunning show
from the renowned national ballet. Georgia has an extensive cultural history of
dancing, and they have taken to ballet with the same craftsmanship and gusto as
with their national dances.
3. Bassiani Nightclub. This nightclub is renowned in Europe
and is the largest techno club in Georgia. Its located under the largest sports
arena in Tbilisi, using an old swimming pool as the main dance floor. If you
are a fan of dancing, nightclubs or electronic music, this is a must-see.
2. Spend a night sipping wine. Georgia is famous for its
wine and a must-visit is one of the many little vintage wine bars sprinkled throughout
the city. For a wide selection, I recommend 8000 vintages, for a quiet ambiance
in a lovely little shop, I recommend Sitio Wine Bar.
1. Jewelry class. Visit Ikorta Enamel Studio and make yourself
a beautiful enameled piece of jewelry in the traditional style. This workshop,
located in Tserovani, an IDP (internally displaced people) settlement, this studio
offers classes weekly to make your own Georgian enameled charm or earrings.
